Nokia Meltemi feature phones should be on the market by now – if it wasn’t dead

Back in 2011, we previously covered Nokia’s Meltemi: an operating system that was meant to revive its feature phone market. Well last month there were reports about how Nokia scrapped the operating system to focus on just Windows Phone devices instead, and today it looks like we’ve got more info about Meltemi’s death. According to one of Reuters’ sources, the first feature phones using Meltemi should be on the market by now. Since we don’t see any Meltemi devices up for sale, and assuming the source is right, it would be safe to say that Meltemi won’t be coming to consumers.

Since not much is known about Meltemi, and it’s never been officially announced (hence never officially declared dead), there’s not much we can say about it. With Microsoft and Nokia planning to release cheaper Windows Phone devices in the future, I guess it’s not going to be a big deal. But it’ll be interesting to see how they can make it work in the low-end mass market.
