Esa-Pekka Salonen, beginning his second guest engagement here this year, added a thrilling performance of Gustav Mahler's Sixth Symphony to the season's exploration of Mahler and his era. He also presided over the world premiere of a new work co-commissioned with the Los Angeles Philharmonic: James Matheson's Violin Concerto, composed expressly for the CSO's principal second violin, Baird Dodge, Matheson's former college roommate and longtime friend.
